Blackpool 4 - 1 Newport County: Blackpool take advantage of penalty miss to claim comfortable win

Posted Sunday, November 27, 2016 by PA

Blackpool romped to a 4-1 victory at home to bottom club Newport after the visitors missed a crucial second-half penalty.

Brad Potts took advantage of a Joe Day error to fire into an empty net in the fourth minute, but the visitors responded well and deservedly levelled through Rhys Healey.

Colin Daniel then saw an effort deflected onto the inside of a post for Blackpool before half-time.

But Gary Bowyer's men were thankful for a superb penalty save from Sam Slocombe as he kept out Sean Rigg's spot-kick 10 minutes after the restart.

The hosts then took charge in the final half hour as Jack Payne netted from the edge of the area in the 61st minute.

The returning Kyle Vassell smashed in a third 10 minutes later, and defender Kelvin Mellor headed in at the near post from a corner to rub salt into Newport's wounds seven minutes from the end.

Vassell hit the post late on as Blackpool, who moved into the last play-off spot, ran riot and Newport were dead and buried.
