StarSport understands MK Dons held initial talks with Gerrard about replacing Karl Robinson, who was sacked a month ago.
But despite amicable discussions both parties have now decided to pursue other options with Gerrard, 36, still weighing up his future plans.

Steve Gerrard is without a job after leaving LA Galaxy
Gerrard has been linked with a coaching position at Liverpool and Reds boss Jurgen Klopp left the door open for him to return to Anfield.
Klopp said Gerrard was "always welcome" at the club and "nobody should be worried that we don’t have space for Steven Gerrard".
Gerrard may also decide to continue his playing career with Celtic and Inter Milan both believed to be interested in signing him.
The midfielder left Liverpool in 2015 after he played 710 times for the Reds winning eight major trophies in a 17-year playing career.
