Gareth Southgate was interviewed for the England job on Monday
Gareth Southgate could be confirmed as England's new manager as early as next week, according to Sky sources.
Southgate was interviewed by a five-man panel at St George's Park on Monday after completing an unbeaten run of four games as interim boss earlier this month.
Football Association chief executive Martin Glenn told Sky Sports News HQ last week Southgate is in a "strong position" to succeed Sam Allardyce on a permanent basis.
And it is understood his appointment could be announced next Wednesday.
Glenn has refused to rule out interviewing rival candidates, but sources say no other interviews are lined up at this stage and Southgate strengthened his claims with victory over Scotland and a draw with Spain this month.
Monday's interview process took three hours, with Glenn joined on the panel by FA chairman Greg Clarke, technical director Dan Ashworth, Graeme Le Saux and Howard Wilkinson.
The final decision on the new manager will be made by Glenn, Clarke and Ashworth.
