Andre Villas-Boas has landed a new job in football management

It is difficult to argue that Andre Villas-Boas has fulfilled his managerial potential up until this stage of his career.

The Portuguese - who is still only 39-years-old - has held posts at FC Porto, Chelsea, Tottenham and Zenit Saint Petersburg, but for no longer than two seasons at any of his previous clubs.

Despite clinching the two league titles to his name in the relatively obscure regions of his homeland and Russia, Villas-Boas does have the 2010-11 Europa League trophy on his CV.

His touchline exploits may not have set the world alight as many expected him to after being handed the Chelsea job in June 2011.

Villas-Boas has plenty of time to ensure his reputation is eventually backed up by an honours list - but the manner of his return to the dugout since leaving Zenit earlier this year will have plenty scratching their heads.

Villas-Boas has been unveiled as the new head coach of Chinese Super League team Shanghai SIPG, replacing 69-year-old Sven-Goran Eriksson.

The former England boss has parted company with the club despite guiding them to a third-place finish this season and qualification for the AFC Champions League.

Villas-Boas has been expected to take over from the Swede as the wealthy outfit looks to a more modern tactician in a bid to challenge Guangzhou Evergrande at the forefront of Chinese football.

Guangzhou - led by another former Chelsea manager in Luiz Felipe Scolari - are one of the undisputed powerhouses in the region, having won six consecutive league titles.

Villas-Boas joins a host of other recognisable names plying their trade in the hugely affluent nation including Jackson Martinez, Ezequiel Lavezzi, Gervinho and Demba Ba.

Having made this move prior to his 40th birthday, one would have to assume Villas-Boas will not be spending the remainder of his managerial career in the Far East.

Regardless of his future plans, the prospect of earning a return to the European scene could be determined by what he can achieve with his new club.
