Di Maria: I thought about quitting and going to see a psychologist

It was not a happy summer for the Argentine national side as they suffered a third cup final defeat in as many years - again to Chile in the Copa America - with Lionel Messi subsequently announcing his international retirement and others like Angel Di Maria mouthing their discontent.

The Barcelona star later reversed his decision and is back in the international fold while fellow countryman Di Maria has revealed he also considered quitting the international scene and thought of visiting a psychologist after the third consecutive final defeat.

"I thought that Leo wouldn't be back, that it was a decision he'd thought through, but I think that it was something he said in the heat of the moment," Di Maria told Tyc Sports.

"These things go through your head. It's hard for us and our families.

"It was a difficult moment and I really did think of leaving [international football]."

So much so that Di Maria has admitted to seeking professional help during such a difficult time.

"My wife and my father persuaded me to stay. It was impossible to say I was done."

I find it hard not to think about my injuries - the last time I was injured I had to laugh because I just couldn't believe it.

"I spoke with my family and really thought about speaking with a psychologist. They supported me."

Argentina will take on Peru and Paraguay in their upcoming World Cup qualifiers and Edgardo Bauza's side lie in third place in the standings.
