The 22-year-old Manchester City defender has been tipped by current captain Wayne Rooney as a future leader.

And Stones says he won’t shirk the responsibility should he be lucky enough to be handed the armband.

City’s £50m summer signing acknowledges that he’s still something of a rookie but that he’s learning every day under the Pep Guardiola revolution at the Etihad.

Stones said: “If it happened in the future I would be over the moon. It’s every little boy’s dream to have that status.

"To be honest. I don’t really think about it too much. I am just enjoying playing for my club. Coming here, playing games and winning cups is all that any England player has wanted.

"Wayne has been the captain for a few years now and done a great job.”

He added: “Credit to him he relishes the responsibilities that come with being a captain. The other team out there are all working as a team to help him out.”

Stones says the current England players would love to put in winning performances to secure the job for stand-in Gareth Southgate.

Stones adds: “I don’t see why not. He knows the players. He knows the set up. he has been great for the under 21s when I was there.

"Its a new challenge for him and I’m sure he will be relishing coming here and doing his best in these four games. Whatever happens after that is up to the FA.”
