Manchester United wanted Arsene Wenger to replace Sir Alex Ferguson
BEST OF ENEMIES: Wenger considered United's offer to replace Ferguson

The tentative approach was made when Fergie first planned to retire in 2002, but was rebuffed by the Frenchman.

Ferguson made his decision to quit public the previous summer before changing his mind in February 2002.

But on his 20th anniversary as Arsenal boss we can reveal that United inquired about snatching him away.

Earlier this month, Wenger confirmed he had snubbed three approaches from Paris St-Germain for his services out of “loyalty” to Arsenal.

It is understood he also gave little consideration to the United offer and went on to land the Premier League crown again that season, finishing 10 points clear of third-placed United.

Last night former Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood said he was unaware of United’s attempt and added: “I don’t think Arsene has ever been tempted.”
