And it is likely to lead to a renewed attempt by Pep Guardiola to land Juventus and Italy centre-back Leonardo Bonucci in the January transfer window.
City were last night waiting for the results of a scan after Kompany was forced off with what looked like an injury to his right hamstring in the final seconds of their 2-1 EFL Cup win at Swansea.
Guardiola put his interest in the experienced Bonucci on hold in the summer in order to give Kompany one last chance to overcome the injury problems that have dogged him for the last two years.
But the Belgium international’s long-awaited comeback at the Liberty Stadium ended in more frustration as he hurt himself trying to prevent Gylfi Sigurdsson’s consolation goal in added time.
Kompany was overheard swearing as he trudged off the pitch and straight down the tunnel without waiting to be assessed by City’s medical staff.
City officials were unable to offer an update yesterday and Belgium boss Roberto Martinez was also waiting for news as he prepares to announce his squad for next month’s internationals.

CROCKED: Kompany is injured again
Defender Gael Clichy offered a glimmer of hope, saying: “I don’t think it’s something big, I hope not.
"He told me he was OK and I hope he is because he has been out for a long time and this club needs their captain. Hopefully it will be just a matter of days and he will be back soon.
"Vincent is Vincent. Fully fit there’s one of the best centre-halves in Europe. We’ve been playing well the whole season, but having someone like him in the team is an extra bonus.”
