The Frenchman’s contract is up at the end of campaign, and he could walk away regardless of how the Gunners get on.

We revealed two months ago the north Londoners had earmarked Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe to be the successor to Wenger, who marks 20 years as boss a week tomorrow.

They were relieved England did not pick the talented young coach as Roy Hodgson’s successor, instead giving the job to the far more experienced Sam Allardyce.

Official minutes of a meeting between Arsenal officials and the supporters’ group in the boardroom at Highbury House near the Emirates Stadium have revealed they are ready for 66-year-old Wenger’s departure.

Arsenal finished second in the Premier League last season but crashed out of the Champions League at the first knockout stage yet again.

And Ivan Gazidis did not hold back speaking to fans about how Wenger and the team had failed once more.

The minutes reveal he told them: “Last season was a disappointment he said and is not what we are aiming for.”

THE BOSS: Wenger will leave next summer

Although Howe, 38, is understood to be the clear pick to success Wenger, much depends on him having another good season with Bournemouth.

Last season he and his team defied the odds to stay in the top flight, finishing 16th, five points clear of the last relegation place.

In the current campaign they are one place lower, having picked up four points from five games.

And the Arsenal hierarchy would find it hard to appoint Howe if he were to take the Cherries down.
