Mauricio Pochettino slammed his Tottenham players for poor defending in their 2-1 to Monaco

Pochettino, who had had his team practising on Wembley-sized pitches all week, said: "We conceded a goal after 16 minutes that, at this level and in football, you cannot concede.

"We conceded the second in the same circumstances. We improved in the second half and had chances to win the game but, after conceding, they started to play comfortably with the ball and with calmness.

"They had only two shots on target and scored twice. We feel very disappointed with the result, we deserved more - but you cannot concede like we did."

Alderweireld, who reduced the deficit with a header, added: "We dominated the game in the second half. We had chances but we couldn't score."

And midfielder Dele Ali said: "We started poorly and they punished us. We weren't ruthless enough."

Spurs now travel to CSKA Moscow in their second Group E game in two weeks time and they desperately need a result to prevent only their second ever Champions League campaign turning into a nightmare.

Despite huge efforts trying to turn the national stadium into as much like 'home' as possible last night, it was the fifth game in a row Tottenham have lost at Wembley since 2008, including two League Cup finals and two FA Cup semi-finals.

Monaco coach Leonardo Jardim said: "We were determined to close Spurs down. Players who have passion for the game love playing in a stadium like this. Maybe it affected Tottenham more because they could not press like they usually do."
