Liverpool reveal why Jurgen Klopp asked to change goal nets

Liverpool's 4-1 win over Leicester has already yielded plenty of talking points.

The Reds pulled off a spectacular performance against the Premier League champions, with goals from Sadio Mane, Adam Lallana, and a Roberto Firmino brace earning them the three points.

It was especially important that Jurgen Klopp's side put in a good performance in front of a feel good Anfield as the club unveiled their redeveloped Main Stand.

A few borderline obsessive fans may have noticed that there was also one other, albeit more minor change.

The Merseyside club have had red nets in the goals for the last four years, but they've now been changed back to a more traditional white.

It must have been a lucky omen since the Reds found the back of the nets in question four times, but it was nothing to do with superstition. In fact, Liverpool have now given a rather interesting explanation, via their official website, as to why, none other than the man himself, Mr Klopp, asked for the nets to be changed.

The German manager and his backroom staff spotted the problem during a training session at the ground on Thursday. Klopp made it clear he wanted the return of the white nets because his players were more likely to - quite literally - improve their eye for goal.

The white nets are thought to be more visible in players' peripheral vision - so many fans behind the goals wear red that it can be difficult to make the distinction. It's not the first time it's happened either, with the same issue occurring in 1995.

NO EXCUSES

That said, the likes of Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge have played in front of the red nets, so you'd have to argue it can't be too much of an issue as they've never had a problem scoring goals.

Liverpool will therefore no longer have any excuses if they don't continue their fine goal-scoring form which has seen them score nine goals in their opening four games of the season.

It seems there's something so erratic about the Reds that even their nets aren't consistent, but Klopp will be hoping that his side's performance against Leicester will be a sign of things to come.
