NAUGHTY: Guardiola will be without his star man for the trip to United

The Manchester City striker had appealed against the suspension, imposed retrospectively after he elbowed West Ham's Winston Reid during City’s 3-1 win at the Etihad on Sunday.

Referee Andre Marriner missed the incident, but the FA charged the Argentinian with violent conduct after watching video footage.

Etihad bosses decided to challenge the decision, but lost their fight when an FA panel upheld the original decision.

It means the 28-year-old will miss the Old Trafford clash with United a week today as well as the Premier League game against Bournemouth and Swansea in the EFL Cup.

An FA statement said: "Sergio Aguero will serve a three match suspension with immediate effect after an FA charge of violent conduct against him was found proven.

"The Manchester City forward was involved in a 76th-minute incident with West Ham United’s Winston Reid on Sunday which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video.

"The club denied the charge and submitted further that, if it was to be found proven, the standard punishment would be clearly excessive.

"On finding the charge proven, an Independent Regulatory Commission went on to reject the club's further claim to decrease the three-match ban.”

The FA could have extended the ban by one match if they had considered the appeal was frivolous, but decided against that.

The loss of Aguero for the United game is a huge blow for City boss Pep Guardiola.

Both clubs have won their opening three league games to sit alongside each other at the top of the table, and Aguero has scored seven goals in eight derbies.

Guardiola, meanwhile, has delivered another snub to Yaya Toure after axing him from City's Champions League squad.

The Ivorian powerhouse has been instrumental in all of City's trophy wins since arriving from Barcelona in 2010 for £24m.

But Guardiola has frozen him out since succeeding Manuel Pellegrini as boss and picked him just once so far this season.

Toure has vowed to remain at the Etihad and see out the rest of his £220,000-a-week contract, which runs until 2017.

But not featuring in the Champions League is a massive kick in the teeth for Toure and another sign that he has no long-term future under Guardiola.
