Marseille won for the first time in Ligue 1 this season and added to Lorient's troubles after two sparkling goals lit up the Stade Velodrome.
They came from Remy Cabella and Bafetimbi Gomis, with the latter striking for the first time since joining on loan from Swansea to clinch a 2-0 victory.
Cabella gave Marseille a 19th-minute lead, curling a free-kick from 25 yards just inside goalkeeper Benjamin Lecomte's right-hand post.
Lecomte saved well twice from Gomis before half-time, while Lorient had a great chance to level on the hour when Cafu's volley was repelled by Yohann Pele.
Gomis rattled in a splendid second Marseille goal in the 70th minute, outwitting Vincent Le Goff with some smart footwork 30 yards out that bought him a yard of space, before running on and cracking a low right-footed shot across goalkeeper Lecomte and into the left corner.
For Lorient it was a third straight Ligue 1 loss, but for Marseille a welcome three points after starting with a defeat and a draw.
