Gomez: Wolfsburg was not my first choice

Mario Gomez admits VfL Wolsfburg was not his preferred destination this summer as he was keen on playing in the UEFA Champions League again.
Gomez returned to the Bundesliga on Wednesday, joining Die Wolfe on a three-year contract. However, the Germany international says most of the clubs he was interested in joining had enough strikers on their books, so he felt that the deal that Wolfsburg put on the table was the best one on offer.
“I wanted to play Champions League football, but most clubs already had enough options in attack,” the former Fiorentina man told reporters. “And then there were some clubs that did play in the Champions League, but are likely to go out after the group stages.”
The 31-year-old did, however, admit that he was excited about returning to his home country and helping his new side become a European force over the next few seasons.
“In the end, the complete package Wolfsburg offered and my desire to return to Germany were decisive. I am perhaps hungrier than ever before. Our goal is to return to Europe,” he added.
Gomez has an incredible record of 138 goals in 236 games in Germany’s top flight, having previously turned out for VfB Stuttgart and FC Bayern München respectively.
