Wenger wants Gnabry to extend contract
Arsene Wenger has revealed his intention to retain the services of German midfielder Serge Gnabry, following his impressive performances at the Olympics.

he 21-year-old was snapped up by the Gunners from Bundesliga outfit Stuttgart ahead of the 2012/13 season, but spent most of his time playing for U18 and reserve sides.

However, Wenger has responded to rumours of interest in the player stating he wants to hand the youngster a new contract.

"I want to keep Serge and to extend his contract. We stood by him for a long time," Wenger told the club's official website.

Wenger's comments arrive following Gnabry's six goals in four games for Horst Hrubesch's outfit in Rio where they will face host nation Brazil in the final on Saturday.

Gnabry spent last season on-loan at West Bromwich Albion, but was reportedly sent packing after his fitness levels came under harsh scrutiny from manager Tony Pulis.

"He went to West Brom and didn't get a game, and we had to rebuild his confidence when he came back," Wenger explained.

"I allowed him to go to Rio without playing for us at all, to get him back to competition and help Germany. He has been here for a long time and it is important for him to stay with us."
