An initial deal worth £80,000-a-week was rejected by his representatives, and Leicester are now preparing a package closer to £100,000 in order to give him more parity with the other key players who helped win the title last season – such as Jamie Vardy who recently signed a new deal.

The 26-year-old signed a four-year deal on £30,000 per week in 2014, but after their shock Premier League title victory last campaign, he is in line for improved terms on a two-year extension – along with most of the first team squad.

Last month SunSport revealed how Mauricio Pochettino‘s Tottenham were keeping a keen eye on Drinkwater’s situation after the Foxes delayed in improving his deal.

Leicester’s perceived lack of urgency had led to the Drinkwater wondering about his worth to the club, alerting title rivals this summer.

And having been curt from Roy Hodgson’s initial Euro 2016 squad, playing for a so-called “bigger club” could be motivation for Drinkwater to get himself back into international reckoning.

While Claudio Ranieri could be facing an exodus of his title-winning side from last season

Drinkwater was integral to Claudio Ranieri's Leicester winning an unlikely Premier League last in season in the centre of midfield.

The former Manchester United youngster has scored 13 goals in 177 games since joining the then-Championship side in 2012.

Spurs signed fellow enforcer Victor Wanyama from Southampton this summer but are lacking depth in the centre of midfield, with Drinkwater potentially fitting the bill.
