Bucharest vs Manchester City - Reghecampf believes his side can beat Manchester City

Steaua Bucharest boss Laurentiu Reghecampf believes he can get the better of the world's best coach to secure Champions League qualification at Manchester City's expense.

Reghecampf will pit his wits against Pep Guardiola, a two-time winner of the competition with Barcelona, as the Spaniard brings his new team to the Romanian capital for the first leg of a crucial play-off.

Victory in the tie would take Steaua, European Cup winners in 1986, back into the group stage for the first time in three years.

Reghecampf thinks it is a realistic target, despite Guardiola's formidable reputation and City's star-studded squad.

The 40-year-old said: "We saw City play Sunderland and have all the information to play football well and achieve a positive result.

"Even if we face a big team, even if we face the best coach in the world with fantastic results, it is a huge chance for us to prove ourselves.

"I am very confident that we will qualify for the group stage again. We have a strong team and the match starts at 0-0."

Reghecampf wants his side to hit the ground running against a team containing the likes of Sergio Aguero, Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva, who reached the semi-finals of the competition last season.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference at the impressive Arena Nationala, Reghecampf said: "We will try from the first match to attack and score goals. We don't have any other choice.

"But there are two matches, we have to be very focused. Let's be serious, if we score one or two goals we will be happy but not at all qualified.

"Next week City will play in a sold-out stadium and will have the support of their fans. All results can be turned around in the second leg. We have just to target a positive result."

Guardiola has admitted he did not feel Yaya Toure could deliver the intensity required for Manchester City's start to the season.

The new City manager sparked speculation over the midfielder's future by leaving him out of his matchday squad for Saturday's season-opening Premier League win over Sunderland, which England goalkeeper Joe Hart also sat out.

Guardiola may now have added further fuel to that by leaving 33-year-old Toure out of the travelling party for the first leg on Tuesday.

Guardiola, who was Barcelona coach when the Catalans sold Toure to City in 2010, said: "He is a player for us and he is training amazing, but I was not sure if he was going to play, and so I prefer it if he stays there training good in Manchester.

"We travelled with two young guys and for the selection I prefer it to be the young guys than Yaya Toure.

"I prefer it if he stays there training and focuses on the next game. I have a lot of respect of him, for his career and quality, but for the first days - against Sunderland - we were looking for a more intensive game. That is why he didn't play, the only reason why."

City laboured to victory over Sunderland but some of Guardiola's ideas were eye-catching and he is convinced his approach will come good.

He said: "We are optimistic to at the end of playing the football I want, playing as good as possible. After that the result is coming.

"The first target is to try to play good for our fans who go to the stadium and they can say, 'Wow, I like how the team plays'. That is how I would like to feel."

Victory for City in the two-legged tie against Steaua would take them into the group stage.

Guardiola said: "I saw enough games about Steaua. I have a lot of respect about how they play and how they do and we are going to try to score goals because in the Champions League, scoring goals away is so, so important."
