Newport County 2 - 3 Mansfield Town: Adam Murray: Plenty more to come from Kevan Hurst

Mansfield manager Adam Murray insists there is more to come from the Stags and matchwinner Kevan Hurst after their dramatic victory at Newport County.

Hurst scored an injury-time stunner to seal a shock 3-2 win at Rodney Parade and get Mansfield's season off to a flying start.

But Murray revealed Hurst was not happy with his own performance and believes there is room for improvement with his new-look side.

Murray said: "Kevan came into the dressing room afterwards and said it was one of his worst performances of his career but that's the high standards he sets.

"It was the perfect result I wouldn't say it was the perfect performance.

"You can train as hard as you want but nothing prepares you for that first game of the season - the tempo and the intensity.

"You're not used to that in pre-season - there's a lot of football played and you don't see the ugly side.

"At half-time we had to get to grips with that, we had to change the shape a little bit and then I thought we got a foothold in the game and scored some really good goals.

"I'm a little bit disappointed with the goals we conceded but that comes with work.

"It's pleasing not to concede from open play because that shows your shape is right but it is disappointing to concede from a set-piece twice.

"It's a situation on the pitch when you can be organised but that will get better with work and time, we know that.

"The main thing today is that we came out with a positive result."

Former Newport striker Matt Green put the visitors in front before Jack Compton equalised for the home side with a superb free kick.

In the second half, Danny Rose restored Mansfield's lead only for Joss Labadie to pull the home side level for a second time.

Three minutes into injury time Hurst grabbed the winner to leave Newport without a win in 12 league matches stretching back to the end of last season.

Newport manager Warren Feeney said: "It's a cruel way to start the season. I thought we played very well in the first half.

"We set the tempo and then went behind against the run of play but showed great character to get back into the game.

"They started the better in the second half and got the goal but once we got the equaliser I thought there was only going to be one winner.

"When you've got a player (Hurst) who is right footed and playing on the left you've got to show him down the left not let him cut inside but we will learn from these mistakes.

"I'm gutted for my players because I thought there was enough in the changing room to get the win."
