Mourinho downplays Cristiano Ronaldo's role in Euro 2016 final

The images of Cristiano Ronaldo willing on his teammates during the latter stages of extra-time in their European Championship final win over France in Paris last month captivated the world, but they've been met with a degree of skepticism by his former coach at Real Madrid, Jose Mourinho.

What looked to be a night of heartbreak for the superstar after he was stretchered off in the first half ended in scenes of sheer ecstasy after substitute Eder hit the winning goal.

"I think he lost a bit of emotional control," said the current Manchester United boss as he spoke to the Portuguese channel Sport TV.

"Cristiano [Ronaldo] didn't give anything extra to the team," he explained in reference to his manic gesticulating from the sidelines.

"It was about those eleven players who were still on the pitch, and the man who was directing them was the coach."

The former Real boss qualified these remarks with a more sympathetic take on matters to round it off.

"Look, I saw his attitude as an overflow of emotions that he went through as the team had within their reach the victory that everyone wanted."
