Boateng set to return for season opener

Bundesliga club FC Bayern München are confident Jerome Boateng will overcome his thigh injury in time to line up for the opening match of the new season.

Boateng picked up the injury during Germany's 2-0 loss to France in the semi-finals of the European Championship on Thursday night.

There were significant fears over the severity of the injury considering he went down in open play without a single opposition player near him, indicating he may have torn a muscle in his thigh.

However, after analysis by the Bavarians' medical staff, the club is now confident the strong centre-back will recover in time to take part in their first game of the season against Bremen at the Allianz Arena on 26 August.

"A thorough examination following his return to Munich has confirmed the initial diagnosis: Boateng sustained a ruptured muscle bundle in his right thigh against France," a statement on Bayern's official website read.

"However, the centre-back will be fit for the season opener."

Bayern will be hoping Boateng does not continue to struggle with injuries after he missed a large part of the last campaign with a muscle injury, playing in only 19 Bundesliga matches all season.
