Bale 'proud' of Wales in defeat

While believing his Wales side deserved better, Gareth Bale was overcome with pride after defeat to Portugal in the semi-finals of Euro 2016 on Wednesday night.

After a cagey game, which was billed as Bale against Cristiano Ronaldo, he could only watch on as his Real Madrid teammate inspired the Selecao with a second half goal and assist for teammate Nani to clinch victory.

But rather than focus on the negative, Bale was keen to look back on a fantastic tournament for the Dragons.

"Yeah, I thought [we deserved better], but now isn't the time to analyse," he told ITV.

"We're obviously massively disappointed, but first and foremost we're very proud."

Facing Ronaldo was always likely to be strange, but Bale was not surprised to see the 31-year-old star in the game in Lyon, but refused to focus on Portugal.

"Obviously, he's a natural goalscorer," he continued.

"He's scored again, but it's about us, not them and we are disappointed."

Once the frustration has subsided, Wales will be able to take confidence from a brilliant summer ahead of the World Cup qualifiers, which start in September.
