SIR ALEX FERGUSON believes Jose Mourinho was wrong to go back to Chelsea – but is sure he'll be a success at Manchester United.

Ferguson, who won 13 Premier League titles in an unprecedented 27-year spell at Old Trafford, believes Mourinho has the right tools to succeed.

The Portuguese manager held an explosive first press conference since he was announced as the club's new manager last month.

Mourinho took digs at old rivals Arsene Wenger and Pep Guardiola and promised that United, at the very least, would be back in the Champions League by next season.

United have struggled since Ferguson retired in 2013, finishing in the top four just once in three seasons under David Moyes then Louis van Gaal.

Mourinho returned to Chelsea that summer and won the Premier League title in his second season – the first for the Blues in five years.

But after a disastrous start to the season, Mourinho was sacked by the Blues for the second time in December.

Ferguson told Sky Sports: "I think there will be a massive improvement.

"I thought Jose was wrong to go back to Chelsea. I really do.

"I think it's always difficult going back somewhere for the second time.

"But ability, charisma, personality, the success he's had – he's won the European Cup twice, with different clubs, the Europa with Porto.

"League titles in all the teams he's [managed].

"His record, you can't ignore that. and I think that Man United are the right kind of club for him.

"I really do. I think we'll do well."

Mourinho has already started the task of revamping the squad with the arrivals of centre-back Eric Bailly and striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan will be announced in the coming days, while Mourinho promised a fourth signing is being pursued.

Mourinho will take charge of his first match in the pre-season tour of the Far East at the end of the month.
