The Three Lions could only finish runners-up in Group B after drawing 0-0 with Slovakia on Monday.
However, they were spared a last-16 showdown with Portugal thanks to Iceland's last-gasp victory over Austria.
Wales' reward for finishing top of Group B is a showdown with Northern Ireland, who finished third in Group C, in Paris on Saturday.
It is only the second time Wales have reached the knock-out stages of a major tournament in their history while it is the third time for Northern Ireland.
And the Republic of Ireland will face hosts France after their late victory against Italy secured them third place in Group E.
The tie of the round is arguably defending champions Spain coming up against Italy in Saint-Denis.
