Wanyama, 24, flew back from a holiday in Kenya to complete a medical yesterday and sign a four year contract.

The midfielder has been desperate to link up with former Saints boss Mauricio Pochettino since the Argentine left the south coast for Spurs two years ago.

He went on strike last summer as he attempted to force a move to join up with the man who brought him to the Premier League – refusing to play against Norwich.

Saints had hoped to keep hold of the hard-man by offering him a bumper contract, with just one-year left on his current deal – but Wanyama showed no intention of signing.

Celtic are set to make £1.1m from the transfer – as part of Saints’ £12.5m agreement to sign Wanyama from the Scottish giants three years ago.

Saints are hopeful former boss Ronald Koeman’s departure to Everton will not kick-start a mass exodus.

The club have already pinpointed Atalanta centre-back-come-defensive midfielder Franck Kessie and Liverpool target Ignacio Camacho as Wanyama’s replacement.

Saints are also confident Ireland attacker Shane Long will sign a new contract to ward off interest from Liverpool, Tottenham and Everton.

Long still has two years left on his existing deal but Saints want to tie him down – like they have to Fraser Forster, Virgil van Dijk, Steven Davis and James Ward-Prowse.
