Embolo is currently in France representing Switzerland at Euro 2016.
The 19-year-old made 40 appearances for Basel in the season just gone, scoring 13 goals and providing nine assists in the process.
And according to The Sun, Jose Mourinho is desperate to land the striker ahead of his first season at Old Trafford.
The former Chelsea boss is reportedly willing to pay £28m to do a deal.
But German outlet Bild claim any potential move is currently being blocked by the player’s mother.
Germaine Embolo is said to prefer a summer switch to RB Leipzig for her son even though the Bundesliga outfit can’t compete with United’s financial clout.
Leipzig are limited by a self-imposed salary cap of around £2.3m-per-year, while the Red Devils are reportedly willing to pay Embolo almost double that to seal a summer swoop.
Earlier this month, Basel’s sporting director Georg Heitz admitted the club would find it hard to keep hold of their brightest prospect since Xherdan Shaqiri.
He told Goal: "It's very probable that he’ll leave this summer. He’s played for three seasons in our first team and he's just 19-year-old.
"At some point we have to accept that we cannot change our league. The players love our club but realise they have to change their league at some point to develop.
"There are only two countries he could go to: England or Germany. I’d recommend him not to make too big a step. He’s intelligent enough to know he needs to go to a place where the coach gives him a chance."
