Del Bosque: Forwards had a ‘hiccup’

Vicente del Bosque admits that his Spain forwards were lacking in precision in their Euro 2016 opener against the Czech Republic on Monday.

The defending champions' manager was clearly aware of his side's shortcomings following their inability to convert a massive advantage in possession and numerous scoring opportunities into goals.

"We took the initiative, but we weren’t successful until the final moments," del Bosque told reporters after the match.

"It’s true that we found it difficult to score. It was tough to go ahead, but from an Andres cross, Gerard did wonderfully," he continued, referring to Gerard Pique's header set up by man-of-the-match, Andres Inieasta's excellent cross.

"We had a little hiccup with the centre-forwards, but in the end we won," he said.

In fairness, Czech Republic goalkeeper Petr Cech does deserve credit for the length of time his side held out against the defending champions. The Arsenal man was immense, making several crucial saves during the first half.

"I do not know if it’ll be enough," Del bosque continued. "But with these three points, we have a cushion [atop Group D].

"I’m happy for everyone," he added.

The veteran manager also commented on the selection of David de Gea over Iker Cassilas in goal.

"Everything’s in order," he said. "Iker’s cooperation on the bench was wonderful."
