Vriends signs for Sparta Rotterdam

Sparta Rotterdam have completed the signing of Go Ahead Eagles skipper Bart Vriends on a free transfer ahead of their return to the Eredivisie next season.

Vriends led IJssel Kowet to promotion via the play-offs alongside the Eerste Divisie champions, but has now decided to join the oldest professional football club in the Netherlands on a two-year contract with an option of a third.

Vriends led Go Ahead Eagles to two promotions and captained them during last season's Europa League qualifying round against Ferencvaros, but admits it was time for a new challenge.

"I am really happy with my move to Sparta Rotterdam. I have really enjoyed my time here and we have achieved great things together such as promotion," he told the club's official website.

"Due to the fact that Go Ahead Eagles will be playing in Eredivisie next season I can be satisfied as I bid farewell to the club."
