SPECIAL ONE: Jose Mourinho
And Starsport understands he's got every reason to think he will be the United boss.
He has privately been reassured that he will still be in charge next season.
It means United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward would have to go back on his word to sack Van Gaal, 64, who has a year remaining on his contract.
Jose Mourinho is desperate to replace him but Woodward knows axing the Dutchman will be an admission that he got the appointment wrong.
Van Gaal is bullish in the belief he's going nowhere.
He said yesterday: “You have to believe me that when I am here I am still the man in charge.
"Otherwise I go. Believe me.
"Every club I have done that. You can ask Bayern Munich or Barcelona, also the Dutch Federation.
"So I have the impression that I am still here otherwise I can’t say all the things that I have said.
"But in the football world, you never know, and I have seen that before.”
United take on Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final on Saturday and Van Gaal believes winning that will make the season a succesful one.
He added: “I think success is in the eyes of the man or woman who are seeing that. For everybody it’s different.
"When you have expectations that Manchester United has to be champions, then you’re disappointed.
"But when we qualify ourselves or win a cup, I am satisfied even if in the eyes of some fans, or many fans, that’s not enough because you have to win the Premier League title.”
