Arsenal's Danny Welbeck faces nine months out after knee surgery
Arsenal's Danny Welbeck is treated at Manchester City after sustaining a serious knee injury.

Danny Welbeck is expected to be out for nine months after surgery to his right knee, Arsenal have announced. The forward sustained the injury at Manchester City on Sunday and scans revealed "significant cartilage damage", the club said.

"Danny will miss the Euro 2016 championship in the summer and his full recovery is expected to take approximately nine months," Arsenal said in a statement.

A nine-month lay-off would mean Welbeck returning in mid-February. It is a bitter disappointment for the 25-year-old, given that he returned in mid-February of this year from a nine-and-a-half-month absence because of an injury to his other knee. "I'll come back stronger," wrote on Instagram.

I will be back stronger! 💪🏾

It became apparent on Tuesday that Welbeck was facing a lengthy lay-off. He had been returning to his best form and had scored five times for Arsenal in 15 appearances this season, marking his comeback with the winning goal at home to Leicester City.

Welbeck would have been selected by Roy Hodgson in England's Euro 2016 squad, which will be named on Monday. He scored six goals in the qualifiers, a figure bettered only by Wayne Rooney with seven.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are closing in on the signing of Granit Xhaka, one of their main summer targets. The central midfielder, who plays for Borussia Mönchengladbach and Switzerland, is rated at around £30m.
