Raphael Varane will only move to Man United if they appoint Jose Mourinho

REAL MADRID star Raphael Varane will snub a move to Manchester United if Jose Mourinho doesn’t replace Louis van Gaal this summer.

INCOMING: Varane fancies a reunion with Jose Mourinho

United have held talks with Varane about a possible £30m move.

The France international has fallen down the pecking order at Real and has struggled to hold down a starting place since Zinedine Zidane took charge.

But while he is open to joining United, the centre-back has made it clear he will pull the plug if ‘The Special One’ doesn’t become the club’s next boss.

Varane, who has 28 caps, is close to Mourinho, who signed him from Lens when he was boss of the Spanish giants in 2011.

He is willing to team-up with Mourinho once again, but has no interest in joining United if Van Gaal remains at the helm for one more season.

Missing out on Varane again would be a huge blow to United, who have turned to the 23-year-old after seeing original target Matts Hummels re-join Bayern Munich.

Former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson tried to sign him in 2011 but lost out to Madrid and landed Phil Jones from Blackburn instead.

Van Gaal’s future remains unclear as Old Trafford. United have reached the FA Cup final and could win their first silverware since 2013, but face a losing battle to secure Champions League qualification.

This was Van Gaal’s main priority and with Mourinho and Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino on the club’s radar, the pressure on executive vice chairman Ed Woodward to make a decision is mounting.

United, meanwhile, are closing in on a £45m deal for Portugal international Joao Mario.

United have turned to the Sporting Lisbon sensational after missing out on preferred target Renato Sanches to Bayern.

Old Trafford bosses have held a series of talks with Mario and his representatives and are confident of striking a deal.

Mario has a £45m release clause in his contract and United are willing to meet it and hand him a long-term deal worth around £140,000 a week.

Sporting president Bruno de Carvalho is reluctant to sell Mario, but knows he is powerless to keep him if they meet the asking price.

He has also spoken to Mario, who has made it clear he wants to join United and test himself in the Premier League.

Starsport understands United will now press ahead with a deal, irrespective of what happens with Van Gaal.
