Athletic Bilbao assured themselves of a top-six finish and a place in next season's Europa League, despite drawing 0-0 with Las Palmas.

Sevilla's loss to Granada means that Athletic and Celta Vigo, who swapped places on Sunday, will finish fifth and sixth in the final standings ahead of next weekend's final round of fixtures.

Las Palmas had already secured their safety and before the game they bade farewell to Juan Carlos Valeron, the 40-year-old former Spain international who announced he was retiring at the conclusion of this campaign.

The hosts dominated possession in the first period, though Oscar De Marcos hit the crossbar for the visitors with the best opportunity in the opening 45 minutes.

Aritz Aduriz went close twice for Athletic shortly after the restart but was unable to register with either a strike from distance of a close-range header.

Raul Garcia then fired wide as Athletic sought a goal before Eneko Boveda was adjudged to be offside when he thought he had scored on the hour mark.

The visiting side were unable to find a winner, though, and dropped below Celta into sixth ahead of their meeting with Sevilla next weekend.
