VfL Wolfsburg midfielder Luiz Gustavo believes the club needs to splash the cash in the off-season if they are to challenge at the top of the Bundesliga table.

The Wolves surprised everyone last season by finishing second in the league standings, behind FC Bayern München, and showed their promise once again this term when they made it through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League before being knocked out by Real Madrid.

However, they have been unable to replicate their form domestically and find themselves in a very disappointing eighth place in the table. If they were to finish the season there, it would mean they would not even qualify for the Europa League next term.

Gustavo believes it is once again time for Wolfsburg to dip into the transfer market in order to bolster the squad and get back on the path they set themselves on last season.

“When I joined Wolfsburg, they told me they wanted to build a great team,” he SportBild. “But if we really want to become a big team, the people in charge will have to do something again.

“There have always been investments in the team. I can see myself stay here if that continues. I want to play against the best and be able to beat them. You need great players for that and a great team.”

Wolfsburg welcome relegation-threatened FC Augsburg to the Volkswagen Arena in the Bundesliga on Saturday as they look to close the gap to FC Schalke 04 in seventh place in the league standings.
