JACK WILSHERE survived a worrying injury scare to come through another 90 minutes of football for Arsenal's Under-21 team on Monday night.

The England midfielder even scored his first goal since his international double in Slovakia last June as the Gunners' youngsters suffered a 2-1 defeat by West Brom at Boreham Wood.

Wilshere, out of action since fracturing his left shin in pre-season training, struck in the 51st minute with a powerful shot to confirm his readiness for a Premier League return this week.

He almost snatched an injury-time equaliser but was denied by keeper Alex Palmer as Arsenal failed to secure the win they needed for automatic promotion to Division One of the Under-21 League.

But there was an anxious moment shortly before half-time when he hurt his right knee in a challenge and left the field clutching an ice pack to the joint.

But he was OK to continue after treatment from Arsenal's medical team and is now pressing to be involved in some capacity in Thursday's match against West Brom at the Emirates.

Monday was Wilshere's third Under-21 game in the space of 11 days following eight months on the sidelines as he battles to prove his fitness to England boss Roy Hodgson.

Arsenal have five remaining Premier League games before Hodgson names his squad for the Euros and Wilshere knows he will have to complete at least a couple of them if he is going to force his way onto the flight to France.
