Wigan Athletic 1 - 0 Coventry: Will Grigg earns Wigan win and stakes Euro 2016 claim

Posted Sunday, April 10, 2016 by PA

Will Grigg's 23rd goal of the season was enough to give Wigan a hard-fought but ultimately deserved 1-0 victory over Coventry in Sky Bet League One.

With Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill watching on in the directors box, the striker was in the right place at the right time to steer home Stephen Warnock's left-wing cross 11 minutes into the second half.

Grigg could have further underlined his case for inclusion for this summer's European Championships, only to see a 66th-minute penalty saved by City goalkeeper Reice Charles-Cook.

Coventry shaded a disappointing first half but could not force goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen into much work and were unable to cope when Wigan upped the ante noticeably after the break.

After Conor McAleny had volleyed wide from a good position, Grigg showed his team-mate how it is done to edge the home side ahead.

Charles-Cook kept Coventry in with a shout with a superb save to deny Grigg from the spot and they threw on former Wigan striker Marc-Antoine Fortune, but there was no way back.
