Real Madrid set to make their move for Jose Mourinho - reports

Rarely a morning goes by without Jose Mourinho stealing the back page headlines and it is no different today, with Real Madrid reported to be ready to try and bring their former manager back to the Bernabeu.

Mourinho has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United in recent months, but the mood in recent days suggests Old Trafford chiefs are not convinced the former Chelsea boss is the right man to succeed Louis van Gaal.

Former United manager and current director Alex Ferguson offered his backing for Van Gaal to continue into the third and final year of his contract last week, while there is a feeling that his assistant Ryan Giggs remains the favoured choice to take over.

Now widespread reports in the UK newspapers and rumours in Spain suggest Real Madrid President Florentino Perez has been in touch with Mourinho’s advisers to assess his mood as he weighs up his options ahead of his return to the game.

Mourinho’s links with a return to Real Madrid are no surprise, with President Perez a firm admirer of the coach who brought the Spanish title to his club in 2012.

Even though he left the club amid much acrimony to make his return to Chelsea in the summer of 2013, Perez’s desire to reappoint Mourinho has not been diluted and he may be set to act on that ambition in the coming weeks.

Mourinho is reported to be “concerned” by the lack of contact his officials have had with United chiefs in recent weeks, with their support for the much-maligned Van Gaal holding firm heading into the final month of the season.

A top four finish and success in the FA Cup may be enough to secure the Dutchman an extended stay at United, leaving Mourinho to consider alternative options as he looks to land one of the game’s elite posts.
