Mainz 4 - 2 Augsburg: Mainz keep up European bid with comeback victory over Augsburg

Mainz kept up their challenge for a place in Europe next season with a 4-2 win over Augsburg lifting them above Schalke into fifth place, at least for a night.

Struggling Augsburg took an early lead when Caiuby was allowed too much space to place his side-footed shot into the far corner of Loris Karius' goal.

However, that advantage lasted only a few minutes before Yunus Malli teed up Christian Clemens to bring the hosts back on terms.

Jhon Cordoba wasted a chance to give Mainz the lead midway through the second half when he volleyed wide with only Marwin Hitz to beat, but a defensive mistake paved the way for Pablo de Blasis to round Hitz and give the hosts a deserved lead.

Markus Feulner's cross rebounded kindly for Koo Ja-cheol to convert against his former club from an angle and bring Augsburg back on terms before half-time.

A De Blasis bullet header back across goal into the opposite corner from Daniel Brosinski's deep cross restored Mainz's advantage, though, and Clemens added a fourth in the 76th minute from Cordoba's pass to keep Mainz on course for European football next season.
