Werder Bremen 1 - 1 Mainz: Claudio Pizarro closes in on Werder Bremen landmark with equaliser against Mainz
Posted Sunday, March 20, 2016 by PA
Claudio Pizarro was on target again for Werder Bremen as they secured a 1-1 Bundesliga draw at home to Mainz.
Julian Baumgartlinger had given the visitors the lead in the 38th minute when he ghosted in unmarked to convert Yunus Malli's pass.
Baumgartlinger then went from hero to villain as he fouled Zlatko Junuzovic inside the penalty area, enabling Pizarro to draw level with Marco Bode as Bremen's all-time top-scorer with his 101st goal for the club.
In terms of chances, the draw was a fair result, although it is unlikely to satisfy either team.
Mainz missed an opportunity to move up to fifth with a win, while Bremen could have pulled away from the bottom three with victory, but were left instead just a point above the drop zone.
