Barcelona star Neymar could be embroiled in a club vs country row this summer due to his desire to compete for Brazil at the Olympics.
The 24-year-old is Brazil’s captain, and although he looks set for another gruelling season at club level with Barcelona, he’s desperate to play in the Copa America and Olympics, the latter of which is taking place in Rio de Janeiro, as reported by Goal.
Neymar would be eligible to play at the Olympics if selected as one of three over-age players in the Under-23 tournament, while his eagerness to play could be down to his failure to win the competition at London 2012.
Brazil’s manager Dunga is keen for his star player to play in both competitions, but should he only be allowed to take part in one, the Copa America in the United States will surely take precedence.
Barcelona’s concerns about Neymar are certainly valid, as should he perform in both tournaments he will be afforded hardly any rest prior to the start of next season.
The former Santos man has excelled for the Blaugrana since his move in 2013, in particular since Luis Enrique’s appointment the following year, and this term his performance level has gone up another notch.
Neymar has netted 19 goals and provided 10 assists in La Liga this term, form that’s been pivotal in helping Barcelona open-up an eight-point lead at the top of the table.
