Granada CF 2 - 0 Sporting de Gijon: Granada boost survival bid by beating fellow strugglers Sporting Gijon

Granada took a step towards Primera Division survival after overcoming Sporting Gijon 2-0 at the Estadio Los Carmenes.

A second-half penalty by Youssef El-Arabi and injury-time strike from Isaac Success separated the rivals in a relegation tussle that was controlled throughout by the home team.

Granada remain in the relegation zone on goal difference, but have swapped places with Gijon to climb into 18th place.

Granada controlled the first half but their endeavour went unrewarded despite mustering a series of shots on goal.

Miguel Lopes saw a 24th-minute attempt well-saved by keeper Ivan Cuellar, who was forced to dive to the bottom right corner to keep the ball out of the net.

Moments later an effort by Fran Rico met a similar fate as Granada continued to press in search of the victory that would give their survival bid a shot in the arm.

Ruben Rochina was proving a handful for Gijon's defence and to underline the point he set up a header for Ricardo Costa that sailed narrowly wide.

It was then Rochina's turn to be denied with four minutes of a one-sided half remaining.

Gijon made a bright start to the second half and were denied only by the left post when Omar Mascarell sought to capitalise on good work by Antonio Sanabria.

The lively Rochina was prominent as Granada reasserted their authority, first flashing a shot wide before setting up El-Arabi, who was denied by the busy Cuellar.

Finally the goal came, David Barral being brought down by Mascarell and El-Arabi stroking home the ensuing penalty.

Three minutes into injury-time and Nigerian forward Success put the result beyond doubt by firing the second.
