Cambridge United 1 - 0 Wycombe Wanderers: Josh Coulson nets winner as Cambridge ease past Wycombe

Cambridge dealt Wycombe's play-off hopes a blow with a 1-0 win.

Josh Coulson struck the only goal of the game midway through the first half as Wycombe slipped down to ninth place in Sky Bet League Two, albeit just one point behind Portsmouth in fifth.

The U's came close several times early on as Ryan Ledson lifted a curling effort just over from a wide position before Ben Williamson headed over from six yards following Harrison Dunk's cross.

Jimmy Spencer then hooked a volley fractionally wide from an angle when a free-kick fell to him.

Their pressure paid off after 27 minutes when Ledson's cross was met by Coulson, whose header took a large deflection off Anthony Stewart to deceive goalkeeper Ryan Allsop.

Defender Coulson has now scored in consecutive home games for Shaun Derry's side, who have recorded three straight home wins.

For Wycombe, Luke O'Nien could only glance a header at Will Norris when well placed.

The second half saw few chances until Stewart looked to atone for his part of the goal 15 minutes from time, only to see his header cleared off the line by Leon Legge.

Sam Wood tried his luck from long range late on but his shot was well held by Norris as Cambridge claimed the win.
