Goalkeeper Willy Caballero was the hero saving spot-kicks from Lucas Leiva, Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana with Yaya Toure scoring the final kick to secure the trophy
Manchester City lifted the League Cup at Wembley after beating Liverpool 3-1 on penalties after the game had finished 1-1 after extra-time.
Fernandinho struck the opener after 49 minutes, Sergio Aguero feeding his overlapping run inside the box and his shot across goal going through Simon Mignolet and into the far corner.
City threatened to double their lead on the hour mark, Raheem Sterling guilty of firing wide against his former team when clean through on goal and with only Mignolet to beat.
Minutes later and Aguero was denied a penalty after tangling with Moreno before Sterling was guilty of another glaring miss when inside the box.
Manuel Pellegrini’s men were made to pay for their profligacy, Phillipe Coutinho firing Liverpool back on level terms with their first shot on target on 83 minutes and forcing the game into extra-time.
Aguero thought he had fired City back into the lead at the end of the first period but his flicked effort was brilliantly saved by Mignolet before Caballero denied Divock Origi in a frantic finale.
