Deportivo La Coruna 0 - 1 Granada CF: Granada climb off foot of table as new coach Jose Gonzalez enjoys winning start

Jose Gonzalez made an immediate impact as Granada coach as his side lifted themselves off the bottom of the Primera Division table with a 1-0 win over Deportivo La Coruna.

Former Albacete and Cordoba boss Gonzalez took over the reins on Monday night following the sacking of Jose Ramon Sandoval.

Sandoval was dismissed following a run of four successive defeats and eight losses in nine games, but Gonzalez enjoyed instant success as Youssef El-Arabi's first-half penalty earned Granada victory at the Riazor.

After a nervous start for the visitors, who started the day four points adrift of safety, Granada settled down and Rene Krhin and Ruben Rochina began to cause problems for Depor's defence.

The decisive moment of the match arrived in the 24th minute when Adalberto Penaranda was brought down by Juanfran inside the area and El-Arabi slotted home the resulting spot-kick.

Deportivo struggled to get back into the game after that and could not make the most of what chances they did create.

Granada began to push forward again in the second half and both teams fashioned opportunities in the closing stages, but it remained 1-0 and in the last minute of stoppage time Depor goalkeeper German Lux was sent off for a challenge on Edgar Martinez.

The home side stay 10th in the league after seeing their winless streak in all competitions stretch to 12 games while Granada leap-frog above Levante at the foot.
