US Sassuolo Calcio 3 - 2 Empoli: Sassuolo's Europa League hopes boosted by timely home win against Empoli
Posted Monday, February 22, 2016 by PA
Sassuolo relaunched their bid for Europa League football by edging out Empoli 3-2 at the Mapei Stadium.
The Neroverde have slipped out of Serie A's top six following a seven-match winless streak, but Domenico Berardi's first-half strike and a Gregoire Defrel brace delivered a first home victory since November.
Empoli had taken the lead through Piotr Zielinski after Sassuolo midfielder Simone Missiroli was dismissed but, after Lorenzo Tonelli promptly saw red for the Azzurri, Berardi fired the hosts level.
Defrel scored two quick goals after the break, with Massimo Maccarone setting up a tense finale by converting a 70th-minute penalty.
