Shakhtar Donetsk and Schalke will meet again in Germany next week all square after a goalless draw at Arena Lviv in the Europa League last 32.
Both sides had chances to win the game, which the hosts ended with 10 men after Oleksandr Kucher was dismissed after picking up his second booking in the 86th minute.
Schalke almost took the lead in the 13th minute when Younes Belhanda left two defenders on the deck in the penalty area before having a shot cleared off the line by Darijo Srna.
At the other end Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Fahrmann used his feet well to deny Oleksandr Gladkiy from six yards.
Schalke wasted a second-half indirect free-kick on the edge of the six-yard box when Johannes Geis fired into the packed Shakhtar wall.
