Zarate was shown a straight red card moments after Khouma Babacar had secured a 2-1 win for La Viola. The 28-year-old initially refused to give the ball back to the opposition, which led to a tussle and he grabbed Jeison Murillo around the neck and whispered something in his ear.
The former West Ham man was shocked to hear that his actions have resulted a three-game suspension, ruling him out of the fixtures against Atalanta, Napoli and Roma.
"I'm lost for words!" Zarate wrote on Twitter. "I'm watching the game right now on Sky Sport and I cannot believe it!!!!!"
He later posted an image of the incident and added: "Yes, yes...three matches for this!!!"
