Costa has been linked with a move back to Atletico throughout this summer and there were suggestions that the Spanish club tried to sign the striker the sold to Chelsea in June 2014 during last summer’s transfer window.
After Atletico sold Jackson Martinez to Chinese side Guangzhou Evergrande for around £32m on Wednesday, Cerezo has now confirmed that Costa is one of their chief transfer targets for next season.
"We have a magnificent relationship with the players who leave this club," he told Spanish radio station Caneda Cope.
"He (Costa) is a magnificent player but he is a Chelsea player. We will do everything possible and let's see what Chelsea say because it does not depend on us."
Costa was a star turn in Atletico Madrid's Spanish title triumph in 2014 (below), in a season when they also reached the Champions League final.
The Brazilian-born hit-man went on to star for Chelsea in his first season at Stamford Bridge, but he has struggled for form this season and was jeered by the club's supporters for what they perceived to be his role in the demise of manager Jose Mourinho last December.
