Blackpool 1 - 0 Gillingham: Blackpool prevent Gillingham taking top spot

Gillingham missed out on the chance to return to the top of League One after Jack Redshaw's first-half penalty earned Blackpool a surprise 1-0 victory.

The Gills could have replaced Burton at the summit on goal difference after the latter's 2-1 defeat at Rochdale but instead Redshaw's sixth goal of the season moved Pool further away from the relegation zone.

After an uneventful opening, Luke Norris went close with a Gillingham free-kick before their goalkeeper Stuart Nelson saved a similar effort from Mark Yeates.

But the hosts did lead on the stroke of half-time when Yeates was upended by Max Ehmer in the area and Redshaw slotted home from the spot.

Blackpool had another penalty shout waved away before Mark Cullen's turn and strike from close range was just past the post.

Superb defending from Tom Aldred denied Gillingham an equaliser after 57 minutes as he flung himself across the goal line to keep out Ehmer's strike.

Redshaw also volleyed wide from 18 yards as Blackpool held on for their third consecutive home clean sheet.
