Derby County vs Manchester United: No selection issues for Derby head coach Clement

Derby head coach Paul Clement can virtually pick from a full squad for the visit of Manchester United in the FA Cup.

While having such options is a luxury, it also means Clement will have the unenviable task of telling some players they will not be involved at all in the fourth-round tie on Friday night.

New signing Marcus Olsson is eligible having not featured in the competition for previous club Blackburn, although the Sweden international is likely to be on the bench with Stephen Warnock keeping his place at left-back.

Clement, still without long-term absentee Will Hughes (knee), could make some changes following the 4-1 league loss at Burnley on Monday and has the likes of Craig Bryson, Jeff Hendrick, Johnny Russell and Chris Baird vying for recalls.

Despite Louis van Gaal's problems at United, Clement believes the Dutchman remains one of the most revered managers of the modern era.

Ahead of the biggest game of his own brief managerial career, Clement will be calling another recent great - his close friend Carlo Ancelotti - for some advice.

He said: "First of all I have those close to me at the club, that's what my assistants are for. But I'm in regular contact with Carlo. I've not spoken to him for a while but if I really need him I know he will be there for me.

"Will I speak to him before this game? Yes I think I will do. He's super calm. He will tell me to work with the players, get close to the players and ignore everything else.

"He always used to say 'control what you are in control of'. So that's what I'll try to do."

Anything other than victory for Van Gaal will heap further unwanted scrutiny and pressure on the United manager and Clement fancies Derby's chances.

"It wouldn't be that much of an upset if we beat Manchester United. Assuming we perform well, it's a fantastic opportunity," said Clement.

Midfielder Michael Carrick could return for United after four games out with a knee injury.

The 34-year-old is now available again but is not ready to play 90 minutes.

United will be without full-back Matteo Darmian, who is sidelined after colliding with Southampton's Shane Long last week, while midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger (knee) and defender Phil Jones (ankle) are still out.

Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, Antonio Valencia and Ashley Young are long-term absentees.

Under pressure Van Gaal claims media knives will be out for him again if United fail to beat Derby.

He said: "When you lose it is more worse and I predicted already, before the game against Southampton, that I cannot lose any more because I am then condemned for the fourth time that I have been sacked. Maybe then you have written the truth, because sometimes it happens."

Asked if he was facing a must-win game at the iPro Stadium, Van Gaal said: "You have to win, because then you are out of the FA Cup."

Van Gaal is happy to turn his attention to cup matters after recent league trials.

He said: "I don't think it has anything to do with the Premier League, it is the FA Cup. We want to win the FA Cup, like every club in England. It is very popular. Everybody has the ambition. It is important and it is another title. We have to give everything for that."
