Chelsea transfer news: Blues had agreed deal for a 14-year-old Sheyi Ojo

Sheyi Ojo underlined his status as one of Liverpool’s top prospects by finding the net against Exeter City on Wednesday, and reports have now emerged suggesting that the winger came extremely close to joining Chelsea in 2011.

Ojo caught the eye that year while playing for England at U16 level, with a host of clubs reportedly expressing interest in the teenager, who last night became Liverpool’s youngest ever FA Cup goalscorer.

Chelsea agreed a £2m deal to sign Ojo when he was just 14, but he eventually elected to join Liverpool instead after the move to take him to Stamford Bridge hit a late hitch, as reported by the Daily Mail.

Since joining Liverpool, Ojo has gained valuable experience out on loan at Wigan Athletic and Wolverhampton Wanderers, and created 15 chances for the latter side in the Championship this season.

Ojo, who had a shot accuracy of 60% in England’s second tier this campaign, will be hoping to make the breakthrough at Liverpool and his cause in that regard is helped greatly by the fact that manager Jurgen Klopp has a reputation for allowing young players to thrive.

With Liverpool still involved in four competitions, there could well be further opportunities for Ojo – who scored twice in 17 appearances for Wolves – to impress this season.

The Reds are still battling for a European spot in the Premier League table, whilst leading the League Cup semi-final over Stoke after the first leg. They have also reached the last 32 of the Europa League and fourth round of the FA Cup.
