Ighalo has been instrumental to the Hornets this term, and finished the 2015 calendar year as the highest scorer across all four divisions with 30 goals.

The Blues are bracing themselves for a number of departures this window, with Loic Remy set to be offloaded with a £10million move for Alexandre Pato on the table.

And according to the Daily Mirror, Chelsea have set their sights on Ighalo, who has also generated interest from Arsenal.

The report however suggests the reigning Premier League champions could delay making a move until the summer.

Ighalo, who signed a new five-year deal in September, recently admitted it would be a ‘dream’ to play for Manchester United.

''I don't think I will be moving but I'm not sure I'd say no if United called,” Ighalo said.

''They were my team growing up. I loved watching Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke on TV. They were my idols and playing at Old Trafford has always been a dream."
